ABOUT AGE RECOMMENDATIONS!!!
We are frequently asked if children who are younger than the recommended age can participate in programs. Generally speaking the answer has to be no. Our recommendations are based upon the kids that we see every day. Since we routinely ask kids to perform at their highest level of ability you can assume that they are going to have to "stretch" each day. Very few children who are younger than the recommended age will be comfortable in that situation. Your child may be extraordinary in many ways but putting them in a group of older, more experienced kids will almost certainly stress them even if you're planning to have them attend with an older sibling or friend. Please remember, the age guidelines are there to help you choose the right program for your child.

PROGRAM DESCRIPTIONS:

Sidewalk Chalk Teams: JUNE 23- 26, Ages 11 and UP, 9 to 11:45 a.m., all supplies included.
Cost — $150
This is a great program and it gets us outdoors! Over a course of four days we will move around Acton and nearby towns to create a series of approximately three giant artworks (something like 9 x 12 FEET) in front of business or other high visibility sites. We'll be using a technique called Grid Drawing to divide a piece of artwork into smaller segments, each of which will be drawn and colored by the participants with soft pastel chalk. This will be a team approach to create a truly stupendous piece of artwork. While the artwork will be short lived (especially if there's a thunderstorm!) it will be amazing. A digital photographic record of each mural production will be available to each participant along with a print of each final mural in place. There will be a series of alternate dates set ahead of time since these projects are so dependent upon weather conditions. Refunds will be pro-rated for missed days if it turns out to be the wettest summer in history!
PLEASE NOTE: Minimum age is 11. Kids will be outdoors, in public places and are expected to behave properly, remain with the group at all times and participate in the activity. Participants should bring water, sunscreen, sunglasses, and any other personal items that may be needed in an off-site location. Parents/guardians may need to drop off/pick up at the location of each days project.

MURAL PAINTING - Acrylic paint: JUNE 23- 26, Ages 10 and UP, 1 to 3:45 p.m., all supplies included.
Cost — $155
Mural painting is both fascinating and fun. We will demonstrate how to "grid" images, scale them to the sizes needed for murals and compose a layout. We will also demonstrate general brush and painting techniques as well as color mixing. We'll be working on masonite panels approximately 2 feet by 4 feet. Mural subjects will be chosen from a variety of suggested topics or participants may work from their own ideas. We hope to have each student paint one finished mural which they will take home when completed.

AIR CLAY 1:JUNE 30 - JULY 3, Ages 8 to 10, 9 to 11:45 a.m., all supplies included.
AIR CLAY 2: JUNE 30 - JULY 3, Ages 11 and UP, 1 to 3:45 p.m., all supplies included.
Cost — $155
Recently we discovered a remarkable clay that allows us to offer a unique and fun program for kids who enjoy getting their hands (faces, arms and hair!) dirty. Sheffield Pottery of Sheffield, MA blends an air-dry clay that doesn't crack and dries rock hard. It's so good we can finally offer some really cool projects. We will be making Ikebana vases, otherwise known as Japanese flower arranging vases and a variety of plaques, coasters, and small decor items. Clay will be painted or sealed using acrylic based materials and the finished products can be amazing! This is a really fun material to use, it's safer than most regular pottery materials and students will do ALL the work!

MANGA 1—Chibi (pokemon) and Super Deformed characters: JULY 7 - 10, Ages 8 - 11, 9 to 11:45 a.m
MANGA 2—Shojo/Shonen type characters: JULY 7 - 10, Ages 11 and up, 1 to 3:45 p.m.,
All supplies included.
Cost — $155
Manga is perhaps the most compelling art form for kids today. Adults tend to minimalize it as cartoon art, but in truth it is a far more complex and highly developed form. It also exists in a range of styles that appeal to children as young as 5 year olds all the way to adults. Our summer Manga program will be a subset of our regular Manga drawing class with a few added highlights such as a 3-dimensional paper panel, Foam-cuts, or possibly a Bas-relief metal-foil panel. The actual projects that are chosen will be age appropriate. These classes will provide some basic drawing information but it will assume that students have an ongoing interest in Manga and the characters or storylines that appeal to them. If your child likes Manga these programs are sure to be high on their lists of desirable classes!
NOTE: Chibi and Super deformed characters appeal to younger kids. These characters are more cartoon-like and often represent fantasy creatures or "cute" people. Shojo/Shonen characters are more realistic and are typically the subject matter of choice for girls and boys over the age of approximately 11. If you're not sure, ask your kids. They have STRONG opinions on these matters!

Screen Printed T-Shirts: JULY 14-17, Ages 11 and up, 9 to 11:45 a.m., all supplies included.
Cost — $160
T-Shirts have become the universal canvas. They are a both a means of expression and a portable gallery. You are what you wear. Now your Manga Maniacs can create what they want to wear. We'll be using both silk screening and block printing as methods to transfer art to shirts. This is a program that requires patience and concentration with the rewards being really impressive. One shirt is provided with the tuition and students may bring up to 3 more.
Silk screened artwork is ubiquitous in modern society. It's on bottles, t-shirts, and mousepads. You name it, it's been screen printed. Nonetheless, there is something incredibly exciting about creating your own screen-artwork. It's a thrill spreading the ink for the first time across the front of a t-shirt and lifting the screen to reveal your own personal masterpiece for all the world to wear. Actually, just a couple of close friends or familiy members but it's still a thrill! This four day program will take students through the entire process of drawing their chosen art, transferring and masking on the screen, making test prints and finally creating the finished T-shirts. Two shirts will be provided to each student. Additional shirts will be allowed if provided by student and time is available during the class. Participants will NOT be required to create Manga artwork if they prefer something else.

Batik Fabric Art: JULY 14- 17, Ages 10 and UP, 1 to 3:45 p.m., all supplies included.
Cost — $160
Classic Batik uses melted wax applied to fabric as a "resist". The wax prevents dyes from reaching the fabric anywhere the resist covers the fabric. The designs and patterns can be beautiful and complex. Unfortunately with the traditional process the wax must be removed by repeatedly immersing the fabric in hot water and it's not uncommon to have a stiff waxy piece of fabric as a result. We will be using a polymer based non-wax resist that works the same way as wax but washes out without the residue. Though it's not the traditional process, the results will be virtually identical. We will be providing a wall hanging size piece of cotton cloth for students to create their batik artwork. Students may bring their own fabric if they have plans for something other than a wall hanging.

Wild Things!: JULY 21- 24, Ages 7 - 10, 9 to 11:45 a.m., all supplies included.
Cost — $150
Some animals are a bit more "wild" than others. If it moves fast, looks cool, gives you the creeps or keeps you awake at night we may pick it as a subject. We'll be painting, using markers, cutting paper, and more. Kids who enjoy the natural world will find this to be a fascinating and fun four days. Projects will be both 2 and 3 dimensional. Minimum age is 7 due to the nature of the materials. Kids will be working in a wet environment with brushes and scissors and are expected to be able to work independently.

The Art of Paper: JULY 21- 24, Ages 10 and UP, 1 to 3:45 p.m., all supplies included.
Cost — $150
Paper is without question the most flexible, adaptable, and unique material artists have ever made a mark on. We'll be cutting, bending, shaping, pressing and imposing our wills upon paper in just about every way possible. This program will open eyes to the remarkable qualities of paper and how cool it can be when used in it's simplest form. A variety of projects are planned. We may even have time to "cast" paper using cotton linters (mulch) to make sheets with embossed artwork directly on the surface.

Sculpy Clay Creations: JULY 28- 31, Ages 10 and UP, 9 to 11:45 a.m., all supplies included.
Cost — $165
Sculpy is a remarkable medium to create 3D artwork. We'll be making a variety of pieces ranging from pendants to jewelry to micro-mosaics. Kids will learn techniques to work with clay, blend colors and plan their designs. Kids who are patient and pay attention to details will love this program and have fantastic results to show for it.

Print Art: JULY 28- 31, Ages 9 and UP, 1 to 3:45 p.m., all supplies included.
Cost — $155
We'll be making prints of all kinds. Screened prints (T-shirt anyone?), block prints, monoprints, multi-color prints and more. There something truly exciting about seeing that first print! Kids love to make a variety of art prints and that's exactly what we'll be doing. We'll have a variety of subjects to draw and work with plus kids can bring their own if they choose. We encourage kids to draw independently although we will provide guidance if needed.
